Jets® – Civil Use

Vacuum collection system

What is a Vacuum collection system?

A Vacuum collection system is a suction and carrier system for liquids, also very dirty ones, through the air, rather than gravity or other mechanical means.

How does it work?

A Vacuum collection system uses a pressure differential created by a Vacuum generator, to suck in and carry sewage, wastewater and liquids in general.

To create the air pressure head that pushes the liquid, you need to create the vacuum downstream of the portion of liquid that you have to carry. There are two types of systems:

  • with Vacuum tank
  • with in-line pumps

Vacuum tank systems are made up of a domed tank, one or more pumps that suck air and send it in to the atmosphere through an exhaust valve, one or more pumps that empty the tank by moving the liquid. Other accessories and automatisms such as level switches, condensate separator filters and tank washing systems are also required.

Our Jets® system uses its in-line pump known as “VacuumaratoTM”, which creates a vacuum directly in the pipe, sucks and transfer the liquids directly together with the air needed to transport them. The tank, the air vent line, the emptying pumps and related accessories/automation are not required.

In case of use with slurry or food residues, the Vacuum pump Vacuumarator shreds them with the incorporated macerator and sends them back to the sewage system, to a storage tank, to a sewage treatment plant, etc.

Where to use it and with what advantages

The most widespread application is represented by sewage collection plants (Vacuum sanitary systems). This is because is the air and not the precious water that carries the human droppings with important benefits such as:

  • drastic reduction in water consumption, only 1 litre/discharge.
  • very small discharge pipes, ex.50 mm instead of 110 mm;
  • possibility of independent piping ways, unrelated to gravity, also ascending ones.
  • Blackwaters are sensibly reduced

Jets technology is used in new buildings or renovations, isolated huts, highly used public toilets, trailers, means of transportation and in all possible situations where the supply of water or sewage disposal and/or treatment infrastructures are not insured.

Vacuum systems are also used to suck up not sanitary sewage such as:

  • rain waters;
  • process waters containing production waste ex. food industries;
  • intake of refrigeration’s condensations in supermarkets;
  • big centrifugal pumps priming.

JETS® TECHNOLOGY FOR THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The United Nations sustainable development Agenda 2030, adopted by all member States in 2015, provides a common plan based on 17 objectives, for peace and prosperity of people and the planet, now and in the future.

For more information: UN Sustainable development goals

Among other things, the plan recommends putting in place actions to implement inclusive and sustainable industrial development through environmental friendly technological solutions.

For instance, 2,5 billion people around the world have no access to health services and almost 800 million people, of which most are found in sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia, have no access to water.

Jets® technology is a helpful instrument to comply to at least three of the objectives set out in the 2030 Agenda.

  • Ensure available and sustainable management of water and sanitation to all.
  • Build a resilient infrastructure and promote a fair innovation for responsible and sustainable industrialization.
  • Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, long-lasting and sustainable.

Within 2030 the 60% of the global population will leave in the cities and such a high concentration of population in confined spaces, will impose new design standards, that must necessarily comply to environmental compatibility criteria, both for the construction of new buildings and for the renovation of existing ones.

International organizations, such as GBC (Green Building Council), provide guidelines, for the proper design and construction of healthy buildings, energy-efficient and with limited environmental effects. GBC Italia, of which GENOVA ENGINEERS S.r.l. is ordinary member, placed among the objectives to be implemented soon, to improve the water efficiency of buildings by encouraging the adoption of technologies to reduce drinking water consumption and wastewater production.

Jets® Vacuum systems are also fully compatible with the separation of sewage at the source, facilitating wastewater treatment and re-use, helping to eventually obtain energy by generating Biogas, with the goal of achieving a zero-emissions circular economy.

On 22nd March 2023 in Milan, on World Water Day, Green Building Council Italia presented its position paper on water efficiency entitled “Efficient water management: from building to city”. This document, on which Genova Engineers collaborated in its drafting, provides interesting ideas to improve water management inside buildings.

JETS® SANITARY SYSTEMS FOR TOURIST INSTALLATIONS AND SEASCAPES

MARINA AZZURRA RESORT
of Lignano Sabbiadoro opened in summer 2019, is an innovative and exclusive accommodation, which is spread over an area of 120.000 m2 on the river Tagliamneto, two kilometres from the river mouth. The resort complex is based on Dutch and Canadian famous “houseboat”. The resort consists of 88 floating houses modules, each one able to host up to 6 persons.

The challenge in this project was to collect the sewage from floating houses at a lower level of the sewer interceptor through a centralized plant while containing the water consumption of the new settlement.

The solution has been identified by dividing the plant into three areas, each part of a pre-assembled vacuum unit Jets® Edge L Duo, with control panel equipped with PLC and inverter. This solution maintains a constant vacuum value in the line, considerably reducing the starting currents and the number of e/motors starts getting a considerable energy-saving and less wear on rotating parts. Through the “touch panel” placed on the plant control panel, is possible to activate all the operating functions of the machine, have access to operating parameters and monitor, even from remote, the automatic operation of the system.

In Italy the biggest Jets® installation is Marina Punta Gabbiani who decided to rely on the Vacuum system for the suction of boat sewage. Docks are equipped with technical cabinets with movable connections to allow users to suck the sludge contained in the tanks of their vessels. The vacuum is used to suck the sludge from vessels with 50 MBA unit, connected to the technical cabinet through a pipes network.

One of the Vacuum unit composed by two 25MBA pumps, that pump the slurry up to the sewer line.

JETS® SANITARY SYSTEMS FOR HOSPITALS

Jets® Vacuum systems provide new solutions for the vacuum collection of sewage, contaminated by viruses, bacteria or radioactivity.

Sanitation

At each toilet flushing, Jets® Vacuum systems suck around 48 litres of air, sucking into the drain pipes the aerosols containing pathogens, generated by the use of the toilet. This helps to prevent potentially harmful emissions to the environment.

Isolation of radioactive sewage

Jets® Vacuum systems are the perfect solution for nuclear medicine departments because they use less than a litre of water for each toilet flushing, against the 6/9 litres of a traditional system and they also reduced the amount of radioactive waste to be treated.

Renovations

Vacuum systems use small diameter drain pipes and can, therefore, be easily and quickly installed in existing structures, with minimal impact interventions, with a reduction of the inconveniences related to this activity. Is not necessary to realize descending columns cause drain pipes have a diameter of 50 mm and they can easily follow ascending routes and then continue in the false ceiling. Kerning will be minimally invasive (the pipe connected to the toilet has an external diameter of 50 mm).

JETS® SANITARY SYSTEMS IN HISTORICAL BUILDINGS

An example of a historical building in Lombardy that thanks to Jets® Vacuum technology has been equipped with toilets which otherwise could not have been installed because the restrictions imposed would have prevented the realization of a traditional plant.

Thanks to the small diameter of 50 mm of then discharges and the possibility to flush the toilets upwards it was possible to realize a new plant freely placing the toilets and without any modifications to current structures.

WITH JETS® NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL TYPES OF BUILDINGS

When building or renovating a dwelling, to place the toilet exactly where you want can be a challenge.
Jets® with all its Vacuum plants allows you to renovate a building, without facing the problem of gravity-related big drain pipes installation, for wastewaters transportations.

The SB GROUP office sanitary plant

Our new offices, inaugurated in January 2019, were derived from a “loft” not equipped with a drain column. During the construction, we have placed two sanitary rooms connected to a small Jets Vacuum system, which allowed us to draw the black and grey waters of the two toilets and the kitchen and discharge them into the sewer system outside the building.

TEMPORARY CONSTRUCTIONS / MOBILE TOILETS

Jets® NOMAD, is a real paradigm shift in the portable toilet industry! This innovative system makes it possible to quickly deploy a water distribution and waste water infrastructure at events, festivals and field facilities of any size. Available in different sizes, it can be placed anywhere and connected to every possible configuration of portable toilets where vacuum toilets are installed.

Jets® NOMAD, designed especially for large outdoor events, has several strengths:

  • With toilet Jets™ there is a significant reduction in water consumption (less than one litre per toilet flush, compared to six to eight litres with a conventional system).
  • With the water distribution module, water can be supplied to all toilets in the settlement.
  • The central sewage collection module can be placed away from the sanitary facilities and the event area.
  • A ‘catcher’ filtration module is available to retain foreign bodies, so as to preserve the proper functioning of the vacuum station and prevent them from being dispersed in the exhaust.
  • With the pumping module, the collected sewage can be sent to a tank or sewer, up to more than 1 km away!
  • All modules are equipped with quick couplings for easy connection by means of hoses.
